Analysis of The Pearl

Many stories have a moral, and The Pearl is no exception. In my opinion, the themes are:

  • Courage
  • The relationship between man and woman
  • Family
  • The war between Good and Evil
  • Greed
  • Prejudice
  • Survival
Kino had to be courageous, but in the process he needed Juana and his family. They battle evil, greed, and prejudice against Native Americans. Failure to win means death, so they must survive. Each little portion supports the story and makes it special.

But the real lesson, I think, is that 'Good things might have a secret identity', meaning that something great might be a curse in disguise. The pearl looked like a miracle at first, but it turned out to be a curse. It killed Coyotito, and changed the family's life forever.
